It’s 15th February, and I’m just about to watch the UEFA Champions League game between Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain tonight. It’s 11:45 pm as I write this post and kick off is at 1:30 am India time(IST).
I always look forward to mid February because the Champions League resumes with the first round of knockout fixtures. It’s the same case every year. The club I support, Chelsea, plays tomorrow night.
It’s been a busy couple of months or month and a half at the start of this year of 2022 and I’m glad to be productive and immersed in my work.
For those of you who follow my Medium, I’m also a musician and composer apart from all the writing as a writer and journalist.
I ended December 2022 with one particular short film score called “The Lost Piano” which I wrote a short post about titled “Memento Mori”: An Important Message For People In The Modern Era Explained In A Short Film Called ‘The Lost Piano’
My work for January and February on the composing front has been pretty interesting, so without wasting too much time, I’ll get straight to them. This is for my portfolio, because the films I’ve been working on for regular work are B-grade Bollywood films, so I can’t really share them.
But I’m looking to work on my first international short film or feature film. So I’m currently networking with directors from around the world, hoping to get a project to work on.
If you’re reading this and you know any directors or producers it’ll be great if you can share this post and my profile with them. I’ll be very thankful.
For a detailed explanation to the scores, you can read the full descriptions I’ve written by opening the videos on YouTube; I’m just writing short summaries here.
I’ll start from latest to oldest.
Tellurian | Sonuscore COTY 2022
This was an action trailer I found available by Sonuscore for their COTY 2022 and it was really cool. I just finished working on it today, like literally a few hours ago, so I’m excited to share it. I couldn’t enter the competition but the team at Sonuscore were nice enough to send me the video to work on.
This was the first full action trailer I’ve done, which was a welcome change from romance and drama, which I’ve usually scored shorts and trailers of.
This one was predominantly string heavy but I also used some ethereal & ambient atmospheric pads, some light sub basses, a bit of brass, some drums towards the end and a riser to make it sound epic.
Haunted House 2022 | Spitfire Audio
This film has nothing to do with Haunted Houses, and is rather an interesting sequence of shots of a city by night, that reminded me of a lot of drives through Mumbai, my city, in the late hours of the night over the years.
This was completely coincidental that I blogged about the ‘Fight Club’ score by the Dust Brothers, and found this footage to work on the same week.
You can read my article about the ‘Fight Club’ score here: Why The Soundtrack To ‘Fight Club’ Is One Of The Greatest Modern Film Soundtracks Of All Time & One That Was Far Ahead Of Its Time
So this score was definitely inspired by the Dust Brothers’ score to ‘Fight Club’ and I got to finally make a completely electronic score to the footage.
Songe | Montreal International Film Scoring Competition 2022
This was a Canadian/French film made available by the Montreal International Film Scoring Competition 2022.
The footage was rather eerie, about this girl seeing herself walking around in a white dress. I went much more ambient with my score to this one along with some mixed piano motifs to signify her confusion.
I Catch You | Score Relief 2022
The final score I made in early January was for The Cue Tube’s Score Relief 2022 competition. They offered a choice between two videos: an animated one and this one, and I chose this because the animated one wasn’t something I was very interested in.
The film shows footage of a man standing in the dark with some narration reflecting on a ‘good man’(the narrator) mocking the ‘bad man’ for his outlook on life and hiding behind the veil of living in the pretense of being ‘bad’. It sort of reminded me of the Pink Floyd song “Pigs”.
I’ve written another article about Pink Floyd’s “Pigs” and, in general, music’s relationship with politics. You can read that here: Music And Its Relationship With Politics & Government Through The Decades: The History Of Anti-Establishment Songs, Its Reflection On Society & Relevance With BLM & Public Policy In 2021–22
I went with more of an orchestral approach to this film, and some soft piano parts roving in and out of the score. It was slightly dark in mood in the end, which I thought would go well with the footage and narration.
So here’s my work on my portfolio so far this year.
I hope you enjoy them!
